in Budapest and delivered the kind of performance that made Queen one of the greatest live bands in rock history.

At the time, nobody watching could have understood just how precious those cameras would become.

Because this would become Queen’s final professionally filmed live performance with Freddie Mercury.

Now, four decades later, those images are coming back.

And fans are going to see Freddie in a way audiences in 1986 never could.

Queen Budapest has been painstakingly restored in 4K and is heading to cinemas and IMAX around the world beginning October 7.

For longtime Queen fans, this isn’t simply another old concert being replayed.

It’s a chance to return to one of the final chapters of Freddie Mercury’s life onstage — with footage restored from the original 35mm film and audio newly remixed from the original multitrack recordings.

Queen Walked Into History That Night

The date was July 27, 1986.

Queen was in the middle of its enormous Magic Tour when Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon arrived at Budapest’s Népstadion.

This wasn’t an ordinary tour stop.

Queen was becoming the first major Western rock band to perform a stadium concert behind the Iron Curtain.

Rock music from Western artists had been difficult for many fans in Communist-controlled Eastern Europe to obtain.

Brian May later remembered that some Queen fans had been listening to the band’s music through illegal cassette tapes.

Then suddenly, Queen was there.

In person.

Approximately 80,000 tickets were sold, with tens of thousands more reportedly listening from outside the stadium.

And Hungary was determined to capture the moment.

17 Cameras Captured Freddie

The scale of the filming was extraordinary for its time.

The concert was professionally captured on 35mm movie film using 17 cameras.

Approximately 25 miles of film were reportedly assembled for the production.

That decision became far more important than anyone realized.

Because Queen’s touring story with Freddie was almost over.

After Budapest, the band performed only five more concerts.

The final one came at Knebworth Park in England on August 9, 1986.

That became Freddie Mercury’s last-ever concert with Queen.

But incredibly, Knebworth was never professionally recorded as a complete concert film.

That makes Budapest something irreplaceable.

It’s the last professionally filmed Queen concert showing Freddie Mercury commanding a stage at the height of the band’s powers.

Now They’ve Gone Back to the Original Film

Four decades later, the Budapest footage has received an extraordinary restoration.

Sir Peter Jackson’s Park Road Post Production in New Zealand returned to the original 35mm material and meticulously restored it in 4K.

The audio has also been newly remixed using the original multitrack recordings.

The goal isn’t simply to make an old concert look cleaner.

It’s to make audiences feel as though they’re standing inside that stadium in 1986.

Brian May has already seen the results.

And his description may be enough to make longtime Queen fans curious.

He called the image quality “breathtaking.”

May said the experience is so immersive that viewers may eventually forget they’re watching a film.

And on an IMAX screen, he expects the scale to be enormous.

Freddie Was Still Freddie

The concert captures Queen performing some of the songs that had become part of rock history.

“We Will Rock You.”

“We Are the Champions.”

“Under Pressure.”

“Bohemian Rhapsody.”

“A Kind of Magic.”

“Crazy Little Thing Called Love.”

“Hammer to Fall.”

But one of the evening’s most unforgettable moments wasn’t one of Queen’s famous hits.

Freddie and Brian May performed the traditional Hungarian folk song “Tavaszi Szél Vizet Áraszt.”

Freddie had learned the Hungarian words phonetically.

Roger Taylor later remembered what happened when the audience recognized the song.

They began singing with him.

For a band performing behind the Iron Curtain, the moment became much bigger than music.

May remembered it as profoundly emotional.

Nobody Knew What Was Coming

Watching the concert today inevitably feels different.

Queen wasn’t announcing a farewell tour.

Freddie wasn’t telling the audience this was one of his final filmed performances.

The band was simply doing what it had done around the world:

putting on an enormous Queen show.

Less than two weeks later, Queen would perform at Knebworth.

Freddie would never tour with the band again.

He died in November 1991 at only 45 years old.

That’s why the Budapest film carries a weight today that it couldn’t possibly have carried in 1986.

We’re watching Freddie without him knowing we’re watching one of the final chapters.

One More Night With Freddie

Beginning October 7, Queen Budapest will play for a limited time in more than 2,000 cinemas across over 50 territories, including IMAX presentations.

The theatrical version will also contain a new interview with Brian May and Roger Taylor reflecting on the concert and its legacy.

Then, on October 30, the project will expand to home and audio formats, including Blu-ray, DVD, digital, CD and vinyl releases.

But perhaps the big screen is where this particular piece of history belongs.

Forty years ago, thousands of people stood inside a stadium and watched Freddie Mercury do what almost nobody could do quite like him.

He strutted.

He joked.

He sang.

He commanded tens of thousands of people with seemingly effortless confidence.

Those people couldn’t have known they were witnessing the last professionally filmed Queen concert with Freddie Mercury.

We know now.

And this October, the lights will go down again.

Freddie will walk onto that enormous stage.

And for a couple of hours, it will be 1986 all over again.

Forty years ago, Freddie Mercury walked onto a stadium stage in Budapest and delivered the kind of
