Kevin Kline is opening up about his enduring 37-year marriage to actress Phoebe Cates, who famously stepped away from Hollywood back in the \u201990s to raise a family. The couple met auditioning for the 1983 comedy-drama \u201cThe Big Chill\u201d and married in 1989. They share two children, Owen, born in 1991, and a daughter, Greta, born in 1994.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf your marriage lasts more than six months, you\u2019re already in the Guinness Book of World Records, if you\u2019re a Hollywood marriage,\u201d Kline remarked to Business Insider at the Toronto International Film Festival. However, Kline doesn\u2019t label their marriage as a Hollywood marriage.<\/p>\n

He said that he doesn\u2019t consider their relationship to be a \u201cHollywood marriage\u201d because they have literally never lived in Hollywood. For most of their marriage, Kline and Cates have resided on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, where she runs the Madison Avenue upscale women\u2019s clothing and accessories boutique, Blue Tree. Kline also noted that despite their fame, he and Cates are both \u201cpretty low-key, non-celebrity types.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why you\u2019ll see no Botox,\u201d Kline quipped. \u201cThese are my lips, what\u2019s left of them.\u201d<\/p>\n

As they near their 36th wedding anniversary in March, Kline praised Cates as a wonderful wife and mother. \u201cShe\u2019s got her head on her shoulders, unlike me. I usually have my head on her shoulders, too, he shared with the outlet. She\u2019s a great wife, a great mother, great person, and she keeps me honest.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cExcept for in interviews,\u201d Kline joked.<\/p>\n

Kline started his career in theater with the Acting Company and earned two Tony awards for his roles in \u201cOn the Twentieth Century\u201d and \u201cThe Pirates of Penzance.\u201d His first film role was in \u201cSophie\u2019s Choice.\u201d He is also recognized for his performances in \u201cThe Big Chill\u201d and \u201cSilverado.\u201d In 1989, Kline received an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for \u201cA Fish Called Wanda.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cates began her career as a teen model, gracing the cover of Seventeen<\/em> magazine in 1979. She also appeared in\u00a0Elle\u00a0<\/em>magazine\u00a0and British Vogue<\/em>, among others. She is best known for her roles in \u201cSarah in Paradise,\u201d \u201cFast Times at Ridgemont High,\u201d \u201cPrivate School,\u201d and \u201cGremlins,\u201d among others. However, except for an appearance in the 2001 film \u201cThe Anniversary Party,\u201d her close friend Jennifer Jason Leigh\u2019s directorial debut, Cates retired from acting in the mid-90s.
