Mariska Hargitay and Jamie Lee Curtis sat down for what was supposed to be a thoughtful conversation about careers, creativity, and personal milestones. Instead, they also gave fans an unexpected reminder that even Hollywood legends can get sidetracked by the smallest disagreements.<\/p>\n
The actresses recently appeared together for Variety\u2019s \u201cActors on Actors<\/a>\u201d series, where they discussed some of the projects that have defined their recent work. For Hargitay, much of the conversation centered on \u201cMy Mom Jayne<\/a>,\u201d the deeply personal documentary she released in 2025 about her late mother, screen icon Jayne Mansfield<\/a>.<\/p>\n The discussion also gave Hargitay an opportunity to reflect on another major achievement. After spending more than two decades portraying Olivia Benson on \u201cLaw & Order: SVU,\u201d she recently fulfilled a lifelong dream by making her Broadway debut in \u201cEvery Brilliant Thing<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n Speaking with Curtis, Hargitay described the experience as both exciting and intimidating. While she has become one of television\u2019s most recognizable stars, stepping onto a stage in front of a live audience presented a completely different challenge.<\/p>\n \u201cI am very unlike Olivia Benson, but nobody knows that except for my friends,\u201d she said. \u201cBeing onstage has been my lifelong goal.\u201d<\/p>\n The opportunity held special meaning because it brought her back to a passion she had pursued long before it became synonymous with one television character. Hargitay even recalled receiving advice years ago from acclaimed stage actress Kathleen Chalfant<\/a>, who once told her, \u201cDon\u2019t sell out and do TV.\u201d<\/p>\n Of course, shortly afterward, \u201cLaw & Order: SVU\u201d entered her life and changed everything.<\/p>\n Now, after decades of success on television, Hargitay says Broadway has allowed her to stretch herself in ways she never expected and revisit a dream she thought might have passed her by.<\/p>\n The transition from television to live theater has required Hargitay<\/a> to embrace a completely different mindset. In a recent interview with PEOPLE<\/a>, she admitted that performing on Broadway comes with a level of vulnerability she rarely experiences on television.<\/p>\n \u201cIt definitely feels like you\u2019re going out without a net, but that\u2019s also the thrill of it,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n Unlike her long-running role on \u201cLaw & Order: SVU<\/a>,\u201d where she knows every corner of the production process, the stage leaves little room for second chances.<\/p>\n \u201cEven though I\u2019m still challenged at SVU, I know the drill. I\u2019m a boss lady,\u201d she said. \u201cI can say, \u2018Cut. Sorry guys, let\u2019s go again.\u2019 \u201c<\/p>\n Broadway, however, offers no such safety net. \u201cBut that\u2019s the challenge,\u201d Hargitay added. \u201cBring it on, baby, let\u2019s do this.\u201d<\/p>\n The Variety \u201cActor\u2019s on Actor’s\u201d conversation<\/a> with Curtis<\/a> later shifted back to Hargitay\u2019s documentary work, with the actress reflecting on the emotional process of revisiting her family\u2019s history. Curtis was in the middle of discussing Hargitay\u2019s return to California while making the film when the interview suddenly took an unexpected turn.<\/p>\n According to Hargitay, there was one detail she simply could not ignore:<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m trying not to laugh, because you just said Los Angeles,\u201d she interrupted, referring to Curtis\u2019s pronunciation of the Californian city.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n The comment instantly reignited a disagreement the pair had apparently had before.
