/>

Dame Esther Rantzen spent decades becoming one of Britain’s most recognisable television figures, but the words chosen by her daughter after her death revealed a much more intimate measure of the woman behind that public life.

“Mum was our irreplaceable everything.”

With that simple tribute, Rebecca Wilcox captured the scale of the loss now being felt by Esther’s family following the broadcaster and campaigner’s death aged 86.

Rebecca also thanked those who have sent messages to the family, explaining that although they may not be able to respond individually, the words of support are being seen.

“Thank you for all the messages,” she wrote. “Please know we’re reading them all but can’t always reply.”

She then revealed she would be taking some time away, adding: “I’m taking a break from things, but will see you all again soon.”

Yet even amid her own grief, Rebecca offered supporters a way to honour her mother that felt particularly fitting.

Rather than focusing only on the television career that made Esther famous, she encouraged people to consider supporting charities and organisations close to her mother’s heart, including Childline, The Silver Line, Dignity in Dying, Oakhaven Hospice and Cats Protection.

It was a request that reflected a central thread running through Esther’s life: turning concern for others into practical action.

‘She was our sunshine’

Rebecca’s personal message followed a joint tribute from Esther’s three children, Rebecca, Miriam and Joshua Wilcox.

They announced the death of their “adored mother” while remembering qualities that television audiences may only have glimpsed behind the presenter, campaigner and public figure.

Their mother, they said, possessed an “endless capacity for joy” and could “comfort every heartache”.

They also remembered her “beautiful way with words” — an ability familiar to generations who watched her on television but which clearly carried an entirely different meaning within her family.

Their tribute then turned to the painful reality of saying goodbye.

“We have been so lucky for so long, no matter how much time we had with Mum it could never be enough, but we are so grateful for our lives together,” they said.

It was perhaps one of the clearest expressions of the family’s loss: gratitude and heartbreak existing side by side.

They also remembered their father, television producer and documentary maker Desmond Wilcox, who died in 2000.

“We are grateful she is finally at rest with her beloved husband, Desmond Wilcox, but we will miss her immeasurably,” the siblings said.

“She was our sunshine.”

A television career that became something much bigger

For millions of viewers, Esther will remain closely associated with That’s Life!, the BBC programme she presented between 1973 and 1994.

Its unusual mixture of consumer investigations, humour and stories drawn from ordinary British life made her one of television’s most familiar personalities.

But her influence eventually extended far beyond broadcasting.

In 1986, Esther established Childline, creating a service through which children facing danger or distress could seek help.

Years later, she founded The Silver Line, focusing attention on loneliness among older people and providing them with a source of companionship and support.

Her work for children and older people ultimately contributed to her being made a dame in 2015.

For her family, those campaigns were not simply additions to a successful television career.

They said her charitable work and campaigning “meant the world to her”.

That helps explain why Rebecca’s request following her mother’s death carries such significance. Supporting the causes Esther valued offers admirers a way of remembering her through the kind of practical compassion that became central to her public life.

She continued using her voice during illness

Esther revealed in 2023 that she had been diagnosed with stage four lung cancer.

In the years that followed, she spoke publicly about her illness and became a prominent campaigner on assisted dying.

It was another deeply personal subject that she chose to discuss in public, continuing to use the platform she had built over decades to contribute to a wider national conversation.

But the tributes from her children have brought the focus back to the woman behind those campaigns.

They remembered not only the causes she championed, but her humour, creativity and audacity.

Most importantly, they remembered their mother.

That distinction gives Rebecca’s description of her as their “irreplaceable everything” its emotional power.

Britain may have lost a broadcaster whose career stretched across generations and a campaigner whose work helped create lasting support networks.

Her children have lost the person who occupied a far more fundamental place in their lives.

A legacy rooted in helping others

As messages continue to arrive, the family has asked for privacy while they grieve.

Rebecca’s decision to step away for a while reflects that need for space.

Yet before doing so, she pointed people towards the causes that mattered to Esther — allowing the affection surrounding her death to become something practical.

It feels particularly appropriate for a woman whose public life repeatedly centred on noticing people who might otherwise have been overlooked.

Childline and The Silver Line stand as major parts of that legacy, while her television work remains familiar to generations of viewers.

But there is another legacy that cannot be measured through programmes, campaigns, honours or charitable organisations.

It lives within the family now mourning her.

To millions, she was Dame Esther Rantzen: presenter, campaigner and one of British television’s most familiar voices.

To Rebecca, Miriam and Joshua, she was something much simpler and impossible to replace.

She was Mum.

And, as her children so movingly put it, she was their sunshine.

Rebecca Wilcox has stepped back from public life following the death of her mother at 86, while asking those wishing to remember the beloved broadcaster to support the causes that defined so much of her life.
