Simpson to play a merciless killing machine, and Arnold Schwarzenegger to play the hero. Cameron and Gale Anne Hurd reportedly stared at each other in disbelief before shutting the idea down cold, judging Simpson far too likeable for the role. Schwarzenegger himself had been eyed for Kyle Reese, the human soldier, until a lunch with Cameron turned into an impromptu pitch for the villain’s part instead. The rest ended up on screen in 1984, with Schwarzenegger as the T-800 and Michael Biehn as Reese, though Cameron has since pushed back on calling Simpson’s brush with the role an actual casting.

The pitch that made James Cameron do a double take

Before The Terminator hit theaters in 1984, producer Mike Medavoy came to James Cameron and Gale Anne Hurd with a casting idea that has since entered Hollywood lore. “Are you sitting down? You must sit down. I want O.J. Simpson for the Terminator and Arnold Schwarzenegger for the good guy, whatever his name is,” Medavoy said, as Cameron later recalled. The director’s reaction was immediate: “Gale and I just looked at each other and thought, You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.”

Psychologists say kids who waited a week between episodes built one skill binge culture erased

Psychologists say kids who waited a week between episodes built one skill binge culture erased

People who can’t fall asleep without background noise share one common psychological profile

People who can’t fall asleep without background noise share one common psychological profile

Too likable to play a killing machine

Simpson was still a beloved football star in the early 1980s, and that popularity worked against him. Cameron felt the athlete was simply too nice to convince audiences as a cold-blooded cybernetic assassin. Schwarzenegger himself revived the story in a 2019 interview with The Independent, saying “it was actually O.J. Simpson that was the first-cast Terminator” and that Cameron “felt that he was not as believable for a killing machine.” Given what came later, the irony speaks for itself.

Cameron, however, pushed back on the word “cast.” Speaking on HBO Max’s Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace in 2023, he insisted Simpson was never formally attached to the role. In his telling, a studio executive floated the name and he shot it down on the spot. The pitch happened; the casting never did.

How Arnold talked his way into the villain’s role

The reversal on Schwarzenegger’s side is just as striking. The studio initially wanted him as Kyle Reese, the resistance soldier sent back in time to protect Sarah Connor. Cameron wasn’t sold on that either, admitting “I was very negative on the idea of Arnold playing Reese.” Everything changed at a lunch meeting between the two men.

Over that meal, Schwarzenegger kept steering the conversation toward the Terminator, the bad guy, dissecting how the character should move and behave. Cameron realized the Austrian’s fascination belonged on screen and offered him the T-800 instead. The hero role went to Michael Biehn, whose wiry intensity fit the battle-scarred soldier far better than a bodybuilder’s frame ever could.

John Wayne picked his own favorite western, and it’s not the one anyone expects

John Wayne picked his own favorite western, and it’s not the one anyone expects

Le Mans was McQueen’s obsession, and it cost him his marriage and his company

Le Mans was McQueen’s obsession, and it cost him his marriage and his company

A footnote that reshaped a franchise

Medavoy’s rejected suggestion remains one of the great what-ifs in genre cinema.
