He believed the show’s old-fashioned humor and small-town charm were a big part of its appeal.

Buchanan argued that old jokes could hold their own against newer material, even if they lacked a fresh punchline. He believed Petticoat Junction proved that a good joke never really gets old. Corny? Perhaps. But the show’s old-fashioned charm was precisely the point.

“You seldom hear a new joke on Petticoat Junction,” Buchanan said. “Sure, the elephant jokes had a short run, and so did the Tom Swifties, but neither had staying power.”

See Also

“I think there’s more small town in most of us than people realize,” Buchanan continued. “The small town is the heritage of the American people, and evidently fans like to relive it.”

Younger audiences and critics sometimes dismissed Petticoat Junction as corny, and Buchanan wasn’t about to argue. However, he had an explanation for that, too: “Americans have a tendency to call anything ancient corny.”

The show’s wholesome characters sometimes made conflict hard to come by. Fortunately, Uncle Joe was always ready to stir up trouble with one of his far-fetched schemes. In a town full of good-hearted folks, he made sure there was never a shortage of mischief.

“Joe is a little simple,” Buchanan said. “You read a script and wonder how you’re going to get 27 minutes out of it. Then you do it and the show comes out fine.”

For Buchanan, the proof was in the finished episode: Even when a script seemed short on laughs, Uncle Joe could help make it work!

= Edgar Buchanan is best known for playing Uncle Joe Carson on Petticoat Junction.
