Fans of Keeping Up Appearances know that even the most serious family emergency can somehow become a completely chaotic situation when Hyacinth Bucket is involved. In this hilarious exchange with Richard, news of her father’s death quickly turns into another unforgettable domestic crisis.

The scene begins with Hyacinth speaking on the phone before suddenly delivering the shocking news: “Richard, Daddy’s dead.” Richard, understandably confused, asks whether she is sure. Hyacinth explains that she has only just put the phone down, prompting Richard to point out the obvious: if her father were actually dead, surely he would not be calling her.

Hyacinth dismisses the idea as silly, accepting that her father was an old man and that a peaceful death was perhaps all anyone could expect. But then, in typical Keeping Up Appearances fashion, the conversation takes an unexpectedly comic turn.

Hyacinth remembers that only the previous day her father had apparently been running around naked at the over-60s. The bizarre detail immediately adds the kind of absurd humor that the sitcom is famous for, turning what should be a solemn family moment into an increasingly ridiculous exchange.

But Hyacinth’s real concern soon becomes clear. They cannot simply leave her father where he is. When Richard assumes that she means they cannot leave him at Onslow’s, Hyacinth insists that her father was much loved and that people will want to see him.

There is, however, one major problem: Hyacinth refuses to take mourners to Onslow’s house. Instead, she tells Richard that he will have to go and fetch her father—and she wants him to do it immediately.

The comedy comes from the contrast between the seriousness of the situation and Hyacinth’s very particular priorities. Even in a moment of grief, she remains intensely conscious of appearances, family reputation and what other people might think.

Richard, meanwhile, reacts with the understated bewilderment that makes his character such a perfect counterbalance to Hyacinth. His attempts to make sense of the situation only seem to make the conversation even funnier.
