Few things matter more to Hyacinth Bucket than making sure people understand that her surname is pronounced “Bouquet.” Unfortunately, in this hilarious scene from Keeping Up Appearances, almost everyone seems determined to call her exactly what her name looks like.

The confusion begins when Hyacinth and Richard arrive at a hotel and announce that they have a reservation. When asked for the name, Hyacinth proudly gives “Bouquet,” immediately explaining that it is spelled B-U-C-K-E-T.

The receptionist understandably repeats the obvious pronunciation: “Bucket.”

Hyacinth quickly corrects her, explaining that they have a “Bucket pronounced Bouquet.” It is one of those classic Hyacinth moments where she is determined to establish a sophisticated image, even though the spelling creates an entirely different impression.

Things become even more awkward when Mr. Poweorthy greets Mrs. Bucket and asks whether this is the Bouquet residence. Richard quietly points out that there are apparently two schools of thought about the pronunciation.

Hyacinth, of course, is not amused.

The situation escalates when the vicar gets involved. He attempts to address Hyacinth, but the pronunciation becomes increasingly confused. “Bouquet” and “Bucket” are repeated back and forth until even the simplest introduction becomes a full-blown comedy routine.

The brilliance of the scene lies in Hyacinth’s absolute determination to control how her name sounds. To her, “Bouquet” suggests elegance and refinement, while “Bucket” is exactly the sort of ordinary association she desperately wants to avoid.

Richard, meanwhile, is left watching the entire situation unfold with his usual patience. He understands that correcting everyone is probably pointless, but Hyacinth is never going to let the matter go.
