But according to medical experts, these viral MRI images show something completely ordinary: a healthy baby in the womb.

A Photo That Won’t Leave Your Feed

The images first surfaced on social media in 2021, then went viral again in 2022 when a Twitter user reposted them, according to Snopes. The post pulled in more than 61,000 retweets and nearly half a million likes. It resurfaced once more in 2023, sparking a fresh wave of shock, confusion, and nervous jokes online.

One commenter wrote that they refused to believe the images were real. Another compared the baby’s face to the alien from “Mars Attacks.” A third said they’d had a similar scan late in pregnancy and were never shown the results — and now understood why.

So Are They Real?

Yes. Fact-checkers at Snopes investigated the claim and confirmed the images are authentic, not digitally manipulated. Two of the most widely shared images were traced back to fetal MRI research conducted at Harvard Medical School, showing fetuses at 19 and 24 weeks of gestation.

Snopes spoke with Jason Frank, a graduate research assistant and Ph.D. candidate at the University of Wisconsin who studies MRI technology and age-related brain changes. He said the eerie appearance comes down to basic physics, not anything unusual about the pregnancy.

“MRI makes it very easy to differentiate between different types of soft tissue found in the body, and we are mostly soft tissue,” Frank told Snopes. “We are mostly water.”

Why the Baby Looks So Strange

Unlike an ultrasound, which uses sound waves bouncing off the body to build an image, an MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves to detect water content in different tissues, according to the National Cancer Institute. Areas with more fluid — like the eyes and brain — light up brightly, while denser tissue appears darker.

That contrast is exactly why the images look so unsettling. The eyes seem to glow. The face appears hollow around the cheeks and jaw. None of it reflects how the baby actually looks in real life — it’s simply how water-rich tissue reads on this particular type of scan.

Fetal MRIs aren’t standard for every pregnancy. According to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, doctors typically order one only when they need a closer look — often to evaluate potential abnormalities in a baby’s brain, spine, or body that an ultrasound can’t fully capture. Ultrasounds remain the more common choice during pregnancy because they’re faster, cheaper, and more widely available.

What We Know

Viral MRI images of fetuses first circulated in 2021 and resurfaced in 2022 and 2023.
Snopes confirmed the images are real and not altered.
The images show fetuses at 19 and 24 weeks gestation, per research from Harvard Medical School.
The ghostly look comes from how MRI machines detect water in soft tissue — bright eyes and hollow-looking features are a normal effect of the scan, not a medical concern.
Fetal MRIs are ordered in specific cases to check the brain, spine, or body more closely than ultrasound allows, according to CHOP.

Why This Matters

For expecting parents, the line between a routine medical scan and a moment of pure panic can be razor-thin — especially in the age of viral social media, where an unexplained image can spread to millions before any context catches up. This story is a reminder that medical imaging often looks nothing like what a layperson expects, and that fear spreads faster online than the science that explains it.

It’s also a small window into how much technology has changed prenatal care. What once required guesswork now comes with tools precise enough to map a baby’s brain in the womb — even if the picture takes some getting used to.

As Frank put it, the science is straightforward, even if the image isn’t: the “glow” in these photos is just water, doing exactly what water does inside all of us.

Doctors Say These “Terrifying” Baby Scans Are Completely Normal They look like something out of a horror movie — hollow eyes, a skeletal grin, a face that seems to be staring straight through the camera.
