During the fifth season of *The Andy Griffith Show*, Don Knotts began looking for another job. There was nothing unusual about the decision at the time. Andy Griffith had said for years that he intended to stop after five seasons, and both men had entered the series expecting that to be the natural end. Knotts had already turned Deputy Barney Fife into the role of his career, winning multiple Emmys, but a television actor still needed to know what came next. So he started taking meetings. One of them was with Lew Wasserman at Universal. Knotts had recently appeared in *The Incredible Mr. Limpet*, and Wasserman believed the nervous, tightly wound comic persona that worked so well on television could carry family films. Universal offered Knotts a long-term picture deal with unusual freedom to choose writers and other creative personnel. Then Andy changed his mind. CBS wanted the series to continue, and Griffith decided to stay for three more seasons. By then, however, Knotts had already committed himself to Universal after months of planning for a future everyone had assumed would be necessary. Years later, both men described the separation with remarkably little bitterness. Knotts said he had simply protected himself when he believed the show was ending. Griffith admitted that losing him hurt deeply. Barney Fife disappeared as a regular after the 1965 season. Knotts moved into films such as *The Ghost and Mr. Chicken*, while *The Andy Griffith Show* continued without the comic partnership that had changed its chemistry. Griffith had originally played more broadly himself, but early in the series he realized that Knotts should be the comic center and Andy Taylor should become the calmer man reacting to him. That adjustment had helped define Mayberry. The friendship survived the career split. Knotts returned several times as Barney and later worked again with Griffith on *Matlock*. What looks now like one of classic television’s most deliberate cast changes was much less orderly while it was happening: one actor believed the show was ending, found himself another future, and discovered only afterward that Mayberry was going to keep going without him.

For 43 Years, Janie Price Handed Ray the Phone. Then the Calls Were for Her. After Ray Price died in December 2013, Steve Popovich Jr. called his widow about the album Ray had finished but would never be able to promote. Janie Price knew the project. She had spent their marriage helping run his business. What she had never done was sit on his side of an interview. She could arrange a conversation and hand Ray the phone. In the weeks after his funeral, she could not bring herself to leave the house to speak for him. Popovich asked, waited, and asked again. Ray had made Beauty Is… while being treated for pancreatic cancer. He had chosen a label and worked with producer Fred Foster on a record he expected Janie to carry forward if he could not. She had been his personal business manager since their marriage in 1970, but the work now required her to meet the public herself. One song on the album had waited almost as long as their marriage. For years, Janie had asked Ray to record “An Affair to Remember.” He liked the song but had never found a place for it on an album. This time Foster agreed it belonged. Ray recorded it with Martina McBride. Janie finally heard the song she had kept bringing to him, on the last record he would make. Beauty Is… was released in 2014. Janie began giving the interviews she once scheduled for Ray. She also met listeners who wanted to tell her where his voice had been present in their lives. Those encounters did not make the first year without him easier or turn her into a performer. They gave her a particular job to finish. Ray had selected the songs and sung them. Janie made sure the record could travel beyond the studio after he was gone. When people called about his final album, she no longer had a phone to hand across the room. She answered it.

Melissa Gilbert looked around the audition room and noticed that the other girls seemed much more prepared to become Laura Ingalls than she did. Some arrived with carefully styled hair and polished clothes. Gilbert was nine years old, wearing overalls and carrying none of that finish. She had recently lost another role and was still learning how quickly one audition could replace another in a child actor’s life. Then she read with Michael Landon. The scene involved Laura talking with her father about the death of the family dog, Jack, beneath a night sky. During the screen test, Gilbert looked up and saw tears in Landon’s eyes. His reaction immediately pulled the same emotion out of her. She later remembered the exchange as the first glimpse of the connection they would use repeatedly on camera over the next several years. What Gilbert did not know was how little competition remained after that. Landon had been given enormous responsibility for NBC’s adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books. When the time came to present the Laura candidates to the network, Gilbert later learned that he did not bring several screen tests for executives to compare. He brought hers. Landon had already decided she was Laura — his “Half Pint” — and effectively presented the network with the choice he had made rather than a menu of possibilities. Gilbert learned she had the part in a much less formal way. Landon’s daughter Leslie attended the same school. Before the official call reached the Gilbert family, Leslie approached Melissa and told her that her father had said she had gotten the role. Leslie later got in trouble for revealing the decision early. The two girls remained friends for decades. *Little House on the Prairie* premiered in 1974 and eventually ran for years with Gilbert appearing in nearly the entire series. Her relationship with Landon became central to the emotional texture of the show, partly because the father-daughter ease viewers saw had been present from the first test. The casting now looks inevitable because audiences spent so long seeing Gilbert as Laura. At the beginning, it was much simpler: one scene, a child in overalls, and Michael Landon deciding he had already seen enough.
