‘The Nanny’ Fran Drescher ‘Feels Very Blessed’ To Still Impact Women Decades Into Her Career

Some people are born to be stars. Whether that be from their smile, personality, or laugh, they are able to draw people in. Fran Drescher is one of those people. Known as an actress, writer, comedian, and activist, she has been working in Hollywood since 1977 and hasn’t stepped away since.

Drescher was born in September of 1957 in Queens, New York. She was born into a Jewish family where her mother was a bridal consultant, and her father was a naval systems analyst. The icon was first runner-up for “Miss New York Teenager” in 1973. She would go on to make her big-screen debut just a few years later in 1977 in “Saturday Night Fever.” The actress only had a small part in the movie, but she wouldn’t let that stop her from continuing to reach for starring roles. A year later, in 1978, Dreschner would land bigger roles in “American Hot Wax” and “Summer of Fear.”

Landing more opportunities from 1978 through the 1980s, Deschner finally became the star she always wanted when she created and acted in the famous sitcom “The Nanny.” The show aired on the CBS network from 1993 to 1999, and Drescher’s career was never the same. She played the role of a family nanny named “Fran Fine” and stole the hearts of viewers everywhere.

After the hit show “The Nanny” ended, the actress continued to grace television screens before she eventually moved to Broadway. Acting and musicals do not limit the talented woman; in 2021, she became the President of SAG-AFTRA. Despite her successful decade-long career in the entertainment industry, Dreschner hasn’t shown any signs of slowing her career down.

Fran Drescher told Capsule 98 that when she first landed her star role in “The Nanny,” it was nothing but divine timing.

“I feel like timing is everything – timing for “The Nanny” worked out because I happened to be on a plane with the president of CBS and I kind of cornered him and he had nowhere to go because he wasn’t going to go to coach to get away from me,” she revealed.

“I didn’t even have the idea but I convinced him to let me pitch him ideas and by the time I was done with that trip, I thought of the idea for the show. So that was all about timing, seizing the day, opportunity knocks and you gotta answer,” she added.

The actress eventually moved on to wear many hats than just acting. The icon has said she prides herself on being a woman who can wear many hats.

“Part of the reason I became a producer is that I get a little bored just with the acting and I like to wear many hats to keep me stimulated,” she said.

Drescher admitted she has always been open to stepping into new career roles. “… let go, live and trust, live and love, do other things and see where it takes me. Sometimes you just gotta let the universe lead rather than you swimming upstream all the time, and it kind of just fell in my lap, so I guess on a certain level it’s meant to be,” she added.

With her long-standing career, the actress, writer, producer, and activist now realizes she is someone that women in the 21st century look up to.

Acting on an episode of “Broad City,” the star opened up and said it was a full-circle moment.

“I was on an episode of “Broad City” and it was Ilana’s directorial debut. She said to me, “If it weren’t for you, we would not be here at all.” Honestly, I appreciated her saying that because she was able to put me in a historical context – how what I did influenced where she is in her career,” she said.

Humbled, she added that she feels blessed to be able to continue to inspire people.

“I feel very blessed that all these Millennial women who are making it now want to work with me because they had a connection to me and feel an affinity for what I did.”

Drescher is an inspiration to so many. To keep up with her these days, fans can go follow her on her popular Instagram page. The star has over 770,000 followers that keep up with her frequent social media presence. The star stays extremely busy between the press, attending award shows, and fighting for what she believes in.

In April of 2022, Drescher posted a picture of herself on tv, but not in a way that most fans probably know her. She captioned her speaking picture with these words,

“Watch my speech @national.press.club about HOW American Labor force must get healthy and stay that way!”

Drescher’s career looks very different than when she stepped on the scene back in 1977; however, she continues to leave a legacy on and off the screen.
