NEED TO KNOW

  • The Andy Griffith Show aired on CBS from October 1960 to April 1968
  • The beloved sitcom starred Andy Griffith as a widowed sheriff raising his son (Ron Howard) in a charming small town
  • Off-screen, Griffith married three times before his death in 2012, while his TV son, Howard, wed his high school sweetheart in 1975

With very few crimes to solve, The Andy Griffith Show’s most eligible bachelor had some time for romance both on- and off-screen.

A staple in American households, the beloved CBS sitcom premiered on Oct. 3, 1960, starring Andy Griffith as Andy Taylor, the widowed sheriff of the fictional sleepy town of Mayberry, N.C. With the help of his aunt (Frances Bavier), Andy balances work and life as a single father to his young son Opie (Ron Howard).

The Andy Griffith Show became one of the most popular comedies of all time, airing 249 episodes before its end on April 1, 1968. Cast member Don Knotts, who played the bumbling Barney Fife, earned five Emmy Awards throughout the series’ eight-season run. The show went on to inspire several sitcoms and produce two spinoffs: Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. and Mayberry R.F.D.

Off-screen, several cast members have shared kind words about their spouses over the years.

Griffith, in particular, called his third marriage to Cindi Knight “splendid,” telling PEOPLE in 1986, “Our thrust in life is to bring joy to each other.”

Here’s everything to know about The Andy Griffith Show cast and their real-life partners.

While Griffith played a widower on the sitcom, he married three women in real life. His third wife was Knight, whom he was married to from 1983 until his death at age 86 in July 2012.

Before his relationship with Knight, Griffith was married to Barbara Bray Edwards from 1949 to 1972 and Solica Cassuto from 1973 to 1981.

“I had been alone for a long time when I met an extraordinary woman named Cindi Knight,” he told Guidepost in November 1996. “Our relationship began as a friendship, but as the months passed, I couldn’t help but notice her strong faith and gentle strength. Did I mention she was also quite beautiful? Somehow she fell in love with me. Five years after we met as friends, we became husband and wife.”

The North Carolina-raised actor shared two adopted children with Edwards: son Andy Jr. and daughter Dixie, born in 1957 and 1959, respectively. (Andy Jr. died at age 37 in January 1996, per Fox News.)

Ron Howard and Cheryl Howard

Ron was just 5 years old when he began playing Opie Taylor on The Andy Griffith Show. Although he continued acting for years afterwards, he made time to attend high school, where he met his wife Cheryl Howard (née Alley).

“I met her, and there was never anybody else,” he told PEOPLE in June 2019. “She’s unbelievably supportive and always has been. Our compatibility has endured through all kinds of experiences.”

Ron and Cheryl dated for five years before getting married in June 1975.

He told PEOPLE that “communication” was key to their decades-long marriage.

“People say, ‘How’d you do it?’ There’s no technique,” he said. “There’s no tactic, other than communication is really important. You have to learn to communicate and have difficult conversations in constructive ways. Beyond that, there’s an element of luck because people either grow together or they don’t, and I don’t think you can force that.”

The Academy Award-winning filmmaker and the author share four children: daughter Bryce Dallas, a Golden Globe-nominated actress born in 1981; twin daughters Jocelyn Carlyle and Paige Carlyle, born in 1985; and son Reed Cross, born in 1987.

Don Knotts and Frances Yarborough

Knotts, who portrayed Andy’s cousin and Deputy Sheriff Barney Fife from 1960 to 1965, also married three times: First, to Kathryn Metz, his classmate at West Virginia University, from 1947 to 1964.

They shared two children, daughter Karen and son Thomas, born in 1954 and 1957, respectively. His marriage to second wife Loralee Czuchna lasted from 1974 until 1983, followed by his third marriage to actress Frances Yarborough in 2002.

Knotts was with Yarborough until his death on Feb. 24, 2006, due to complications from lung cancer, per CBS News. He was 81.

His daughter Karen, who also became an actor, shared a poignant memory of her father and Yarborough in January 2025, telling Woman’s World, “Here’s the thing about my dad. He had this funniness that was just completely, insanely natural. Even when he was dying, he was making us laugh in hysterics. My stepmother and I got into fits of laughter, and I had to run out of the room.”

George Lindsey and Anne Wilson

George Lindsey became a staple on The Andy Griffith Show as happy-go-lucky gas station mechanic Goober Pyle. He joined the show in 1964 after Jim Nabors left to star on Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. and continued the role on the spinoff Mayberry R.F.D.

Before his death at age 83 in May 2012 following a brief illness, Lindsey was in a relationship with Nashville businesswoman Anne Wilson. Though neither Lindsey nor Wilson spoke about their relationship publicly, she was described as a “dear companion of many years” in his obituary.

The Alabama native was previously married to Joyanne Herbert from 1955 to 1991. The exes shared two children: son George Jr., born in 1962, and daughter Camden Jo, born in 1964.

One year after the sitcom wrapped, Howard died in January 1969. He was 63.

Until his death, the Los Angeles native was married to Helen McNear. The couple had one child, son Christopher, per his obituary in the Valley Times.

Hal Smith may have played “town drunk” Otis Campbell on the show, but in reality, the New York-raised actor was a husband to his second wife, Louise C. Smith.

The couple tied the knot in 1947 and were married until Louise died in 1992, according to Woman’s World. The pair had one child, son Terry. The magazine also reported that before meeting Louise, Hal was married to WIBX radio secretary Vivian Marie Angstadt.

Hal died of an apparent heart attack in January 1994, per the L.A. Times. He was 77.

Jack Dodson and Mary Weaver Dodson

A later addition to the sitcom in 1966, Jack Dodson made his presence known as colorful county clerk Howard Sprague on both The Andy Griffith Show and Mayberry R.F.D.

In 1959, he married Emmy-nominated Murder, She Wrote art director Mary Weaver Dodson, who also worked on shows like Columbo, Taxi and Full House. The pair, both Pittsburgh natives, were parents to two daughters, Amy and Cristina, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Jack died at age 63 in September 1994, while Mary died of complications from Parkinson’s disease at age 83 in February 2016.
